History

Science is Elementary (SiE) was founded in April 2008 by Tzipor Ulman, a Stanford chemistry PhD and a lifelong science education volunteer. Motivated by the critical state of science education in elementary schools in the Bay Area, Tzipor decided to bring the Silicon Valley community into schools. By reaching out to her own network of scientist and engineer friends, she recruited volunteers to facilitate “cool” experiments in local elementary school classrooms.

The organization began with sample lessons at two elementary schools located in Silicon Valley.  Now in its third year, the organization reaches 900 underprivileged students every month.  Lessons take place in 6 Bay Area schools, facilitated by 120 volunteers.
